SPC Vision Tip of the month - Subgroups
In each newsletter we plan to include a small section to help you get the most out of SPC Vision. Just basic hints and tips to show you new or existing functionality that you might not know about. This month, we will look at ‘Subgroups’.
This is a very useful feature which allows you to group product characteristics into categories also known as subgroups. This can be very useful especially when there are a large number of product characteristics as would be found on a large or complex part. It is not uncommon for a CMM to measure more than a hundred features and analysing each one individually can be time consuming.
This is where subgroups can be useful. They allow you to view charts and statistical analysis for individual characteristics and for the ‘subgroup’. See the example below.

The top left screenshot shows the subgroups for the product e.g 60 Bore C/Face. Directly underneath is the expanded subgroup showing the individual characteristics of each group.
The control chart screenshot shown top left displays all characteristics within the subgroup on the same chart and the bottom right screenshot is the statistical analysis for the complete group.
The benefits of using subgroups are:
- Provides an efficient way of displaying and organising complex products and data.
- Cuts down chart viewing and analysis time
- Allows capability calculation for characteristic groups and families and specific areas of the product.
Subgroups can be very easily set up in the product configuration screen in CONFSPC. Please contact us if you would like further information.
